2000AD

Any fans?

I'm going through my collection of... digital copies acquired by legally questionable means of Mezazine Vol. 3.

More interestingly, I'm also playing Rogue Trooper (PC). Very enjoyable, though clearly designed more as console game.

A couple general notes on Judge Dredd. The Stallone film isn't IMO quite as bad as it reputation (despite the obvious blasphemy), the other movie Dredd is clearly better, but slightly... boring, somehow.

My all time fav Dredd story is "Unamerican Graffiti", the first appearance of Chopper.

Fav 2000AD series/character is tie between Chopper and Halo Jones (best thing Alan Moore ever wrote and that's saying something).

I've always been interested in Judge Dredd but I've never gotten round to reading it, maybe there's more fans around?

Re: 2000AD

Introduction to those who haven't even seen movies:

Judge Dredd is set in 2099- post-WWIII Mega-City 1, which was build around modern New York area. MC1 has hundreds of millions of people and to maintain order - particularly in post war chaos - strict action was needed. Enter the Judges: they are the legislative branch, the executive branch and the judicial branch. They are the police. They are judge, jury and when necessary executioner. And toughest of them is Joe Dredd.
The Judge system was created in MC1, but was soon imitated by other mega-cities of world. (With much of world radioactive wasteland - like Cursed Earth of North America - mega-cities are nearly only places to survive and have non-mutated offspring.) There's MC2 (California), Texas City, Brit-Cit, Hondo City (Tokyo) and others. But they have their own variants of the system and few of those stomp on crime as hard as MC1 judges.

The series (created 1977) was originally set in 2099, but after a story featured turn of century, they decided Dredd would move on in real time; always set 122 years to the future. This has continued for almost 40 years, almost 2000 weekly issues - (practically) every story happening in chronological order! (Take that, all you universe-booters.)
Though the other publication Judge Dredd Megazine was created for the specific purpose that it could contain Dredd stories not limited in the timeline like in 2000AD itself.

Many other series in 2000AD are also set in same universe as Dredd, though some in future, past or alien space. I'd say around half of them are; number of them are even spinoffs of minor Dredd characters.

Dredd is an atypical hero, one who follows rules far more strictly than Daredevil and is brutally unforgiving - even to minor offenders. He does work within the system to change laws when they appear clearly unjust, but first and foremost he upholds the law and he believes in Judges, not democracy. You won't sympathize with him giving a graffiti scrawler six months, but most of the time he is a heroic character, even an epic hero.
